WoW: Weeks of Welcome

Weeks of Welcome is an 8 week extended orientation experience designed to make it easier to find activities and experiences that will enhance you first-year of college. The schedule focuses on campus academic and social, wellness, creative and cultural art events, and more. Other items on the schedule include retreats for students, Family Weekend, and local activities in the Dayton community.

Trained as a physicist and a philosopher, Dr. Vandana Shiva is a world-renowned expert and activist on issues of agriculture and food. She has published more than a half-dozen books on issues of gender, peace, ecology, sustainable development, water, genetic engineering, and bio-piracy. Ad advocate for third-world women and traditional farming practices, Dr. Shiva has worked with grassroots organizations around the world to make important changes in ecological policy and practice. She has been honored with numerous international peace, justice, and environmental awards, and in 2003, she was identified as an environmental “hero” by Time Magazine. Shiva is Director of the Research Foundation on Science, Technology, and Ecology, which she founded in India in 1997.

Free. Will you start out the month with only a $10.00 bill to meet your family’s basic needs? Or, will you be one of the unlucky ones? You’ll find out when you join us for a unique opportunity to experience the virtual realities of poverty.  During the simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families. The simulation enables participants to look at poverty from a variety of angles and then to recognize and discuss the potential for change within their local communities. After the simulation, participants will reflect on the experience and dialogue about the implications of poverty.

REAL Dayton is a service-learning, retreat-like experience during fall break which includes volunteering in the city of Dayton, learning about the assets of Dayton, meeting people making a difference, and reflecting on our call to be active citizens and compassionate neighbors. REAL D involves Reaching out, Enriching yourself, Acting for others, and Learning about Dayton. Begins on campus on Wednesday. Thursday through Saturday we stay off campus doing volunteer projects in the city of Dayton and spending the nights off campus in furnished facilities.

BreakOuts provide students with an opportunity to get off campus and do something different with their fall break time. BreakOuts are motivated by our call to serve one another, especially those who are underserved in our society.  Through these experiences, students will learn more of the root causes to some of our worst societal ills, such as racism, poverty, hunger, and homelessness.

Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer is deputy director and chief economist of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and Professor of the Economics of Climate Change at the Berlin Institute of Technology. Since 2008 he has served as joint-chair of Working Group 3 of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and organizationw hich shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore. Dr. Edenhofer’s presentation is co-sponsored by the University of Dayton’s SEE (Sustainability, Energy, and Environment) Initiative and by the College of Arts and Sciences.
