New Student Orientation Programs
Academic Engagement Programs
Transitions
Transitions is a free of cost pre-orientation program for incoming first-year students of color, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Through a series of presentations and activities students are introduced to integral support services and resources, as well provided an opportunity to network with fellow UD students, faculty, staff and administration.
President's Welcome
Come to UD Arena on Saturday, August 20 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. for the President’s Welcome events. The President of the University of Dayton, as well as the Provost will address students and their families. This event is a tradition at UD and marks the beginning of orientation.
Opening and Closing Events
There are only a few times when the incoming class of 2011 will all be together. The UD Believes event takes place on Sunday, August 21 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Here you will get to meet the team of student leaders that helped put together your orientation, as well as learn a little bit more about the university you will call home for the next four years.
The Closing Event, Life is Change, serves as a way to round out your orientation weekend. Gather as a class and listen to a motivational speaker as you reflect on your first few days at UD and prepare for your first day of class. This year, Judson Laipply (seen on the Today Show, Tosh O. and from the Evolution of Dance) will be presenting Life is Change on Tuesday, August 23 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Small Group Discussions
The small group discussion sessions offer a chance for new students to meet other students, faculty and staff as well as explore topics that are relevant to the transition into college. Find these Small Group Discussions on your schedule and be sure to attend with your floor mates! They are required events!
This I Believe, published in 2006, is based on the NPR Series of the same name that was founded in 1952 and hosted be Edward R. Murrow as a daily radio program. The book features eighty short stories from all walks of life. The First Year Read Program provides something for everyone in this thought provoking collection that will inspire readers to think about the beliefs of others, as well as, what they believe in. "This I Believe is a provocative trip inside the minds and hearts of a diverse group of people whose beliefs - and the remarkably varied ways in which they choose to express them - reveal the American spirit at its best." Service
Crayons to Classrooms Service Project

This year the New Student Orientation Leaders decided to add a service component to the orientation program. Selecting an organization that would benefit our local Dayton community and the educational development of children and young adults of our area was important to the leadership team. Crayons to Classrooms, a nonprofit teacher resource center, was selected as the recipient. Crayons to Classrooms helps under-funded teachers from low-income schools in the Dayton region obtain free school supplies for their economically disadvantaged students. Supplies are provided at no cost to teachers, families, or schools. Crayons to Classrooms believes no child should go to school without the basic supplies needed for learning. We also believe if teachers and students have the tools to succeed - they will. To participate, bring one ofthe suggested items to the President's Welcome, Saturday, August 20th at UD Arena and look for the drop off location in the Concourse. To view the items needed and learn more about Crayons to Classrooms, click here to visit the First Year Service Project.
Resources and Transitioning to College Programs
Campus Resource Fair Representatives from many offices around campus will be available to provide information and answer questions about resources UD offers. This fair will be during and after the Parent and Family Orientation sessions on August 20, 2011.
Vendor Fair
Grab a bag from one table and fill it at the next one. Local vendors come to campus to offer information, coupons and loads of free stuff and free food. Students can learn about places to eat, do their laundry, shop, or have fun.
