The Marianists at UD

It is an honor to speak for a tradition of men and women whose work; scholarship, teaching and learning has comprised the heart and the head of the University of Dayton.

We are vowed religious men and women; lay Catholic men and women; Christian and non-Christian men and woman; American, Asian, African, Indian, and more who commit ourselves to forming a Learning Village, a community of challenge and support where faith and reason are complementary lights in the life-long search for truth.

The University community is a convocation of men and women who are involved in a conversation where contemporary culture and the Catholic intellectual tradition meet, where the discipline of scholarship lives next to the artistic intuition, where teaching and learning can be found in classrooms, residence hall corridors, and in the student neighborhoods.

Rev. James Fitz, S.M., Rector (email the Rector)

Our Mission

In the Constitution of the University of Dayton, the Rector of the University is given the responsibility of focusing the development of the Catholic and Marianist Character of the University. The Rector, a strategic partner in the University structure, is responsible to insure the presence of the Catholic and Marianist character of the University. Every facet of the University community will find, in the Office of the Rector, the means to make this character visible, fruitful, and pervasive in the fulfilling of its duties.

Our Character

The Catholic and Marianist character of the University of Dayton is critical to its mission and vision. Primary responsibility for enhancing the Catholic and Marianist character of the University rest with the Members of the Corporation, the Board of Trustees, and the President. Responsibility for developing the Catholic and Marianist Character of the University is decentralized, i.e., the responsibility is delegated to the major divisional leaders such as Vice Presidents and Deans. These divisional leaders are responsible for developing programs for enhancing the Catholic and Marianist character within the mandate of their division.
