Profile

I am interested in how to receive and pass on the faith and sacramental/moral life that characterize the Church on the way to eternal life with the triune God through the mediation of Jesus Christ. The relationship of theology, philosophy, and biblical exegesis interests me, particularly as this shapes the doctrinal articulation of the Fathers as received by the high medieval theologians (Augustine and Aquinas being particularly important to me, although my work is in contemporary theology). The theology of historicity is another key interest. I frequently engage Jewish philosophy and theology, with special attention to the particularity of faith. I also enjoy dialogue with evangelical scholars and admire their biblical fluency and compassion for the weak. I previously taught for nine years at Ave Maria University, and in 2006-2007 I was the Myser Fellow at the Center for Ethics and Culture at the University of Notre Dame. Since 2007 I have served as Chair of the Board of the Academy of Catholic Theology, and I also participate regularly in the Society of Biblical Literature, of which I am a member. Since 2004 I have been a member of Evangelicals and Catholics Together. With Hans Boersma, I am co-director of the Center for Catholic-Evangelical Dialogue. I currently co-edit book series for the University of Notre Dame Press, Catholic University of America Press, Sapientia Press, and Brazos Press.
